Why Students Attended the PPHA Conference

Comments from:  JJ Hernandez, student at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford

What attracted you to the conference?

I intern at the Center for Rural Health Practice (CRHP) at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.  The director of CRHP, Michel Meit, invited me to accompany him to the meeting

What did you want to learn?

I had no large expectations going into the conference.  I am newly exposed to the field, and wanted to get a broad understanding of what public health is all about.

What did you learn?

I gained a wealth of knowledge at the conference.  If I were to write it all down it would the length of a novella.  The major things I learned were (1) gaining perspective into the issues surrounding health disparities among minorities, and (2) the need for trained public health workers.

What was a highlight?

The highlight of the conference was definitely the conversations I had with people and the networking with public health professionals.  I gained insight into the passion people have for public health.

What do you hope for the future of at your campus related to PPHA?

I hope that public health becomes known to our campus, and realizes how vital it is to our campus community.  I foresee the certificate program offered next semester in public health will get students interested in the field.  I hope students will become excited about the field because there is a great need for trained public health workers Pennsylvania.

Thank you for your interest in the Pennsylvania Public Health Association.

Student membership is free until 1 year after you graduate. To become a student member, please contact Andrea Shissler at andreashissler@comcast.net
